2008 Vintage in Review - Matt Bowness   07/07/08

Well Folks... another vintage has come and gone, and what do we have to look forward to?

In what was another hot season for most of Western Australia, we found that most of our crop yields were above average, and on the back of last years particularly low yields, this was very refreshing indeed!

A particularly warm spring led to early and rapid bud-burst, with early harvest estimates predicting picking some 3-4 weeks early! a very mild December, however slowed things down and subsequent fruit set and berry formation followed a familiar pattern of development. There were some quite severe hail storms in Margaret River which, depending on vineyard location, dessimated some crops (particularly chardonnay!), however our vineyards were spared any substantial degree of damage.

In all, Sittella crushed 145 tonnes of fruit; approximately 60% white and 40% red. The first fruit picked was our estate grown chardonnay on January 20th, and the last, some Frankland River Shiraz on March 31st. This has been the biggest crush we have done and i am very happy with all fruit and wine quality accross the board.

By now, all of our 2008 whites have been bottled and will all be available to try in the coming weeks. Keep an eye out for some of these wines i am particularly excited about ! Our first release Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, an elegant estate grown Verdelho, and another first release, a Late Harvest Verdelho. In barrel some of the wines looking particlarly smart already, are our Swan Valley Shiraz and some of our reserve material.

Thankyou once again for your continued support of Sittella Wines, and i hope you enjoy our new releases in the coming year.

Sheraton 07 Wine Awards   29/08/07

Sittella had a very successful outing at one of the states premier wine awards, the Sheraton Wine Awards, held last month.

Our 2007 Margaret River SEMILLON won a SILVER MEDAL in a very competitive field of wines. A range of vintages were on show with our wine just being pipped for best wine in class by a 2004 vintage which illustrated the propensity of the variety Semillon to aged magnificantly!

Our 2007 Swan Valley MUSCAT ALEXANDRIA was a finalist, finishing in the top three, and missing out on the top wine award by half a point!

Both wines are already showing well. The 2007 Semillon can be enjoyed young, but will age beautifully over 2 to 5 years. The desert style Muscat will be great to enjoy over summer. Both wines are available from our cellardoor and restaurant.

Winemakers Report - Vintage 2007   12/07/07

Well, following one of the driest years on record harvest at Sittella commenced on the 17th January, two weeks ahead of usual. Chardonnay was the first variety picked off the estate, with Verdelho in close succession. Some very 'hot spells' around Australia Day and the proceeding weeks ensured all varieties (both reds and whites) were picked ripe and early. The last grapes were received at the winery on March 9th some 6 weeks earlier than 2006!!! Total crush surpassed 100 tonnes, however single vineyard sites had yields down between 10-25%. We very actively sourced fruit from a variety of growers this year, and the final production comprised 65%white and 35%red grapes.

So what can be expected from such a hot early year? Well, the varietal whites have been bottled and are due for release shortly. They are displaying lots of intense flavours and freshness. Also, because of rapid sugar accumulation brought on by hot days, there is a higher than average natural acidity in this years wines. I am particularly happy with the fruit/acid balance of all the whites and the subsequent lively fresh characters of the wines. The reds, although early days at the moment, are displaying lots of richeness of flavour with nice tannin structure, so with further maturation in oak, some very exciting wines to follow!!

In short: the 2007 Vintage here in Western Australia is one of the best i have seen in my short 10 years making wine and so lets get excited about the wines we will see over the next couple of years !!
